He was given the CBE two years ago - and there's apparently an unwritten rule that no one can get more than one or 'promoted' within three years - so he is again eligible in a year's time. He'll get a knighthood then, I'm sure.

Doing a few quick sums, I would suggest that there will be about 30,000 honours holders at any one time (base on numbers here) and that they typically come to more mature people so life expectancy at time of award might be 15 years.    So that's 1 in 2000 of us has an honour.  That looks about right when we look around at member here and contacts, and I take my hat of in respect to those I have the privilege to know. And that includes people who are or have been remunerated for the role played. 

I'm not writing totally "sweetness and light" for the system. There are, I also know, others who would from what I know of them be deserving of a "gong" but haven't been nominated, or if they have turned down / filtered out / declined.  And I do not know - for example - any of ChrisB's suggested athletes for whom the criteria for selection may involve general public perception.

 
Tend to agree with sentiments above, but popular opinion I suspect wouldn't allow you to get away with ignoring, for example - the women's football team, ditto the women's rugby union team - all doing what they were paid to do.

I must admit I'm one of those unsure about the whole honours system.  I've personally known people who have been very deserving recipients thanks to a voluntary role, or perhaps going significantly above and beyond in their day job, though at the senior level implied by some of the paid job titles, "above and beyond" probably ought to be expected.  Those described as "Lately..." do look rather like a retirement present, or perhaps acknowledgement that someone should have been appreciated more during their career.  The awards listing really would be better for giving a bit of detail (or perhaps a link to the original nomination?), rather than the many described as for "Services to <just doing their job>".

 

In a National voluntary organisation I have been involved in the nomination process for civic awards, "just doing their job" is not sufficient even for and award for being a highly committed volunteer.  There has to be more about that person than just doing a job or roll.

The awards process is not perfect and I agree that just being a certain level of civil servant should not warrant a gong

 
Also, civil servants have their own rungs that they automatically move up while employed as such....don't get me started....

 

I didn't log those, feeling the the award of a recognition is the important bit (to me, anyway) not which rung of the ladder you are put on.


Yes, but they don't get the reward us campaigners get of travelling on public transport and thinking "I had a bit to do with getting that running"
