Living in Cornwall, but spent 4 years at Plymouth Polytechnical College (now part of the University) taking the various marine Radio Officer certificates (Merchant Navy, not the other navy).
Joined my first ship as a trainee in Falmouth, but took over the same ship for my first solo trip as R/O in Cattewater harbour.
Also took her for scrapping in that trip.

I am only a naturalised Janner having come to Plymouth in the 1976 from Paddington as a Railway Supervisor.
Part of my job included running Friary Yard and the Branches to Plymstock (formerly Yealmpton and Turnchapel) and Cattewater Harbour which joined at Cattewater Junction.
There is not much left now.  Friary is not much more than a run round loop,  Plymstock is closed and lifted and the Cattewater branch is out of use and has been lifted from  the Scrap Merchant just beyond the site of the junction.  No more Esso Fawley Tar Tanks, No More Fisons Fertiliser or Steel for Blight and White.  No more clay from Marsh Mills to Victoria Wharf or Cement from Blue Circle at Chelston Meadow to Chasewater and no more scrap for Severn Tunnel Junction or Government Stores for the Dockyard Trip.
The Cattewater is an arm of the sea from Mount Batten , past Turnchapel and Oreston towards Laira.

Blimey!

I've just dug out my own 'certified copy' of my own Birth Certificate: I was born in Devonport, on 11 March 1959, in the Alexandra Maternity Home (long gone now).

I am a total Janner. Apart from a 6 month stay in London I have lived here all my life. Born at home less than 1/4 mile from station and lived in Stuart Road next to the Cornwall main line between Cornwall Junction and Devonport Junction up till I was 14. Then all over much of Plymouth. A warm welcome

I've moved these posts here, simply as an opportunity for personal introduction.

I was born in Plymouth, lived in Plymstock and Elburton until I was 14, then my family moved to Bristol.

My eyes lit up at the reference to Cattewater.  Non-Plymouth people probably wouldn't even have noticed it.

Please do offer some introduction here.

Chris from ... well, Nailsea, via Plymouth.

Another Janner.

I was born in Devonport. A few years in Cornwall (Helston) then in Plymstock from 1978-1991, since then in Buckinghamshire!
