[otd] 29th June 1898 - First trains across Newfoundland
As at 27th November 2024 18:38 GMT
From a visit in September 2019, there pictures from St Johns, Newfoundland showing museum pieces from the 3'6" gauge railway that ran 906 miles from there across the island from 1898 until the system was closed in 1988.
All around the world, there are stories of railways that were vital in their time but have been lost - this one at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newfoundland_Railway - and my visit there nearly five years ago made it feel personal.
The final picture is from around 20 years before the line closed, public domain
