My mum and dad, still then just teenage friends at the local youth club, took a trip on it in its final year. They had to borrow money from an aunt in Fazakerley to get home again! Typical teenagers - nothing changes.

My Dad was born in Crosby, brought up in Bundellsands, served as an air raid warden and fire Marshall in Liverpool in the Second World War, and spoke in fond terms of the Liverpool Overhead Railway.  It was NOT nationalised in 1948 being a purely local operation, and it closed in 1956 (30th December) having - well - rotted to the extent that it would have needed virtually rebuilding.

The Liverpool Overhead Railway operated along the Liverpool Docks and opened in 1893 with lightweight electric multiple units. The railway had a number of world firsts: it was the first electric elevated railway, the first to use automatic signalling, electric colour light signals and electric multiple units, and was home to one of the first passenger escalators at a railway station
